What is print on demand, and how does it work for t‑shirts?

Print on demand means a product is made only after someone orders it. For t-shirts, the brand uploads its designs, a print partner keeps plain tees in stock, and when an order comes in the partner prints that one tee and ships it straight to the buyer.
Nobody sits on a pile of unsold stock. ZOJO runs entirely on this model: every tee on our site is printed in India by our print partner after you place your order. Here's how it works in practice, what it's good at, and the catches you should know about as a buyer.
How print on demand works, step by step
This is the path a ZOJO order actually takes.
- You pick a design, a colour and a size, and pay. You can pay the full amount online, or pay 20% online and the rest to the courier. Nothing goes to print until the online part is paid.
- The order goes to the print partner. They take a blank tee in your size and colour from their stock.
- They print the design onto it (more on how in the next section).
- The tee is packed and handed to a courier, usually within 24-48 working hours of payment. We ship with partners like Delhivery, Xpressbees, Blue Dart and Ecom Express, whichever serves your pincode.
- It reaches you in 5-8 working days in most of India. Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast can take up to 10.
There's no warehouse of finished tees anywhere in that chain. Until you order, the design is just a file.
Which printing method do print-on-demand tees use?
Print-on-demand tees are usually printed with DTG or DTF.
DTG (direct-to-garment) works like an inkjet printer for fabric. Water-based ink goes straight into the cotton, so detailed art with lots of colours and shading prints cleanly, and the print feels soft rather than plasticky. Our anime tees are DTG printed on 240 GSM cotton.
DTF (direct-to-film) prints the design onto a sheet of film first. The film is then heat-pressed onto the tee.
What print on demand doesn't use is screen printing. Screen printing needs a separate screen for every colour, so it only makes sense when you print a big batch of the same design. We compared the two, including how each one holds up in the wash, in DTG vs screen print.
Why a clothing brand would pick print on demand
The biggest reason is stock risk. A brand that prints 500 tees of one design upfront has to sell all 500 or lose money on the leftovers. With print on demand, a design that doesn't sell costs nothing to keep online.
That's also why a small brand can carry a lot of variety. We have 54 tees on the full catalogue right now, from anime art to gym slogans, and some of them come in sizes from XS to 3XL. Stocking every design in every size and colour would need a warehouse and a lot of money sitting in boxes.
And it's cheap to start. You don't pay a printer for a bulk run before your first sale. Weighing it for your own label? We went through who it suits in is print on demand worth it.
The trade-offs, for the brand and for you
It isn't all upside. Here's what changes when a tee is made to order.
It takes a little longer. A tee sitting in a warehouse can ship the same day. Ours gets printed first, so it leaves in 24-48 working hours instead. If it's a gift, order about 10 days ahead. The full timeline is on our shipping page.
Cancelling has a cut-off. You can cancel for free until the order goes to print. Once printing has started, the tee is already being made, so it can't be cancelled. You can still return it within 7 days of delivery for a full refund.
Each tee costs the brand more to make. Printing one piece at a time is dearer than printing hundreds at once, so the brand's margin is thinner. For you, that shows up as prices that sit above the cheapest bulk-made tees. Ours are Rs 699 for a regular tee, Rs 899 for a 240 GSM oversized tee and Rs 999 for a 260 GSM terry oversized tee, with GST and shipping included.
The fabric depends on the blanks. A print-on-demand brand picks from the plain tees its partner stocks. So check the product page for the fabric and GSM before you buy. Ours are 100% cotton at 180 GSM for regular tees, 100% cotton at 240 GSM for oversized tees, and 90% cotton with 10% polyester at 260 GSM for terry. Not sure what GSM you want? Our GSM guide explains it.
How to judge a print-on-demand tee before you order
You can't touch it first, so read the page properly.
- Find the fabric and GSM. If a store doesn't list them, ask before you buy.
- Zoom into the photos. A detailed print like the Om Namah Shivaya tee, with its shading and Devanagari lettering, is the kind of art DTG is built for.
- Check the size chart. On our site it's the last photo on every product page.
- Read the return policy. Made-to-order shouldn't mean no returns. Ours is 7 days from delivery, full refund for any reason, with a free reprint if the tee arrives damaged or misprinted (return policy).
Is print on demand the same as custom t-shirt printing?
No. Custom printing means you send your own design and get it printed. Print on demand is just the way a tee is made: one at a time, after the order. Some print-on-demand stores take custom designs. We don't right now, so you pick from the designs in our catalogue.
Is print-on-demand quality good?
It depends on the blank tee and the printer, not on the words "print on demand". A detailed DTG print on heavy cotton can look great, while the same art on thin fabric won't last as long. Check the GSM, the fabric and the return policy before you order.
Why does a print-on-demand t-shirt take longer to arrive?
Because it's printed after you order it. Ours are printed and shipped within 24-48 working hours of payment, and most orders arrive in 5-8 working days.
Is print on demand free to start as a brand?
Usually there's no upfront printing cost, because you pay for each tee only when an order comes in. You still have to pay for your own website and for ads, so it isn't really free.
What happens if a print-on-demand tee arrives misprinted?
With us, you open the order within 7 days of delivery, pick what's wrong and add a few photos. We print the same tee in the same size again for free, or refund you in full if you'd rather.
