Which gym t‑shirt should you wear: sleeveless, regular or oversized?

Which gym t-shirt should you wear: sleeveless, regular or oversized?

The best gym t-shirt is the one that suits the workout: a sleeveless tee for shoulder and arm days, a regular cotton tee for most sessions, and an oversized tee for warm-ups, cold mornings or when you'd rather not show every line of your body. For lifting, a cotton gym t-shirt is fine. For long runs in the heat, a synthetic sports tee dries faster.

Below is how our three gym fits compare in numbers, so you can pick one before you buy. All of them are on our funny gym t-shirts page.

Sleeveless vs regular vs oversized at a glance

These numbers come from our product pages and size charts, size M.

  • Sleeveless, Rs 699: 100% cotton, 180 GSM. 40 inches across the chest, 27 inches long. No sleeves, so the arms and shoulders are free.
  • Regular, Rs 699: 100% cotton, 180 GSM. 40 inches across the chest, 27 inches long. A close crew-neck fit you can wear outside the gym too.
  • Oversized, Rs 899: 100% cotton, 240 GSM. 44 inches across the chest, 29 inches long, with drop shoulders.
  • Terry oversized, Rs 999: 90% cotton and 10% polyester in a terry knit, 260 GSM. 44 inches across, 28.5 long. The thickest and warmest of the four.

GSM is the weight of one square metre of the fabric. Higher means a thicker tee, and a thicker tee is warmer. Our GSM guide explains what 180, 240 and 260 feel like in the hand.

When a sleeveless gym t-shirt makes sense

Pick sleeveless for presses, curls, pull-ups and anything overhead. With no sleeves in the way, your shoulders move freely and nothing bunches at the armpit. It's also the coolest of our gym tees, since it's the lightest fabric with the least of it.

Ours are cut like our regular tee, just without sleeves: 40 inches across in an M, so it sits close without being tight. Three lines come sleeveless: Everything Hurts (EVERYTHING HURTS AND I'M HUNGRY, with a dumbbell on each side), I Don't Need A Permit (for these guns, with a flexed arm on each side) and Things I Do In My Spare Time, with six small gym icons.

When a regular gym t-shirt is the better pick

A regular tee is the all-rounder. It covers your shoulders on the bench, it doesn't flap around on the treadmill, and you can walk out of the gym and into a cafe without changing.

At 180 GSM cotton it's light enough for an Indian summer. Our regular gym lines include Certified Beast, laid out like a food label on the back, Keep Your Squats Low And Your Standards High, and Monkey Never Cramps, a cartoon monkey in a green cap and shades. The non-gym designs in the same cut are on our printed t-shirts for men page.

Is an oversized t-shirt good for the gym?

Yes, with one catch. An oversized tee hangs off you, so it's comfortable for warm-ups, rest days and lifting when you don't want a tight fit. The catch is weight. Ours are 240 GSM cotton, which is a heavy tee, so it holds more sweat and stays warmer than a 180 GSM one. For a hot cardio session in June, the regular or sleeveless tee is the better call.

Where the oversized fit wins is a 6 am session in winter, or going straight from the gym to college or work. Several gym lines come as oversized t-shirts, including Certified Beast, Everything Hurts, I Don't Need A Permit and Monkey Never Cramps.

What about terry?

A terry t-shirt is the warmest option. It's 260 GSM, and the 10% polyester doesn't breathe as well as pure cotton. We'd keep it for cold mornings between November and February, or for wearing over a sleeveless tee until you've warmed up. One More Rep is one of our gym designs that comes in terry, and our post on what a terry t-shirt is compares it with cotton in more detail.

Which size to order

  • Sleeveless and regular: take your usual size. An M is 40 by 27 inches.
  • Oversized and terry: also your usual size. The extra room is already in the cut, so an M is 44 inches across. Go up one only if you have broad shoulders or you're between two sizes.

Most of the gym tees run S to XXL, and Monkey Never Cramps starts at XS. Women can wear the sleeved ones too. They're a unisex regular fit, so go by the chest number on the size chart.

Price, delivery and returns

Sleeveless and regular gym tees are Rs 699 each, or any two for Rs 1,199 and any three for Rs 1,749. Oversized is Rs 899, or two for Rs 1,599. Terry is Rs 999, or two for Rs 1,799. Mixing fits takes Rs 50 off each tee.

We print each tee after you order, ship it within 24-48 working hours and most orders arrive in 5-8 working days. Shipping is free anywhere in India. If the size is wrong, we swap it for free, and you can return any tee within 7 days for a full refund. The rules are on the exchange and return policy page.

How to keep a gym tee's print going

Gym tees get washed more than anything else you own, so care matters. Wash it inside out in cold water, dry it on low heat and iron it inside out. Don't leave a sweaty tee balled up in your bag overnight. Our post on how to wash printed t-shirts has the rest, and if you want more ideas on picking a design, see our older gym graphic tees guide.

FAQs

Is cotton good for gym t-shirts?

For lifting, yes. Cotton is soft and it breathes. If you run long distances in the heat, a synthetic sports tee dries faster than any cotton tee.

Is sleeveless better than a t-shirt for the gym?

For shoulder and arm work, sleeveless gives you more room to move. For everything else, and for wearing outside the gym, a regular tee is easier.

Should I size up in a gym t-shirt?

No. Take your usual size in the sleeveless and regular tees. In the oversized tee, size up only if you have broad shoulders or you're between two sizes.

What GSM is best for a gym t-shirt?

Lighter is cooler. Our 180 GSM cotton tees are the best for hot sessions. The 240 GSM oversized and 260 GSM terry tees are warmer and better for winter.

Can women wear these gym t-shirts?

Yes. The sleeved gym tees are a unisex regular fit. Measure your chest and pick the size on the chart that matches.
