Does DTG printing crack? What we've learned printing every tee to order

A good DTG print shouldn't crack in normal wear. When it does, it's usually because too much white ink was laid down on a dark tee, the print wasn't cured properly, or the shirt went through a hot dryer or got ironed straight on the print. Get those three things right and a DTG print on a heavy cotton oversized t-shirt fades slowly over time instead of cracking.

We print every ZOJO tee with DTG after you order, our terry oversized tees included, so here's what we've learned about it and what you can do at home.

What DTG printing actually is

DTG means direct-to-garment. A printer sprays water-based ink straight onto the fabric, a bit like an inkjet printer does on paper. The ink soaks into the cotton fibres instead of sitting on top as a thick layer, which is why a DTG print feels soft and can carry gradients and fine lines.

On white or light tees, the colours go straight onto the fabric. On black, navy or bottle green tees, the printer first lays down a layer of white ink, called the underbase, so the colours on top don't sink into the dark cotton and look dull. That white layer is where most cracking starts.

Why some DTG prints crack

Too much white ink. A thick underbase sits on the surface more like paint. When the fabric stretches, the stiff layer can't stretch with it and splits into fine lines.

Poor curing. After printing, the ink is heat-pressed so it bonds with the fibres. If that step is rushed or too cool, the ink stays weak and starts flaking in the first few washes.

Heat at home. A hot tumble dryer or an iron pressed directly on the design softens the ink again, and it cracks as it cools.

Thin fabric. Light cotton moves and stretches more, so the print has to flex more. Heavier cotton holds still and keeps the ink in place.

Does DTG last on an oversized t-shirt?

This is where fabric weight helps. Our All You Need Is Techno oversized t-shirt and the other oversized t-shirts are 100% cotton at 240 GSM, so the fabric is thick and doesn't stretch much when you pull it on. Big back prints like the dancing mushroom on that tee, or the melting hourglass on Time Is Soft, have more ink on them than a small chest logo, and a stable fabric matters more for them.

Our terry oversized t-shirts are 260 GSM, 90% cotton and 10% polyester. Regular fit tees are 180 GSM, lighter and better for an Indian summer, and they need a bit more care with heat.

What you'll usually see after many washes is fading, not cracking. The colours get a little softer, like a favourite band tee. Cracking in the first month means something went wrong in printing, and that's worth reporting to whoever sold you the tee.

How to stop a DTG print from cracking

  1. Wash it inside out, in cold water.
  2. Use a normal mild detergent, no bleach.
  3. Skip the hot dryer. Dry it in the shade or on low heat.
  4. Never iron directly on the print. Turn the tee inside out first.
  5. Don't wring or twist the printed part hard when it's wet.

Our product pages say the short version: wash inside-out in cold water, dry on low heat, flip it inside out before ironing. We go into more detail in how to wash printed t-shirts, and if you want to compare print methods, read DTG vs screen print.

DTG or screen printing for a small order?

Screen printing uses a separate screen for each colour, so it suits one simple design printed in bulk. DTG has no setup per colour, so it suits detailed art and small runs, even a single tee. That's why print-on-demand brands like us use it, and why you can print one tee with your own design on our custom t-shirt page. Film transfers are the other common option, and DTF vs DTG printing covers how each one feels and where each works best.

FAQs

Does DTG printing crack after washing?

A well-printed DTG design on heavy cotton usually fades a little over time rather than cracking. Cracking often comes from a thick white underbase, weak curing, a hot dryer or ironing on the print.

Is DTG printing good quality?

Yes, for detailed, full-colour art. The print feels soft because the ink soaks into the cotton. Heavier fabric, like 240 GSM cotton, holds the ink better than a thin tee.

Why do prints on black t-shirts crack more?

Dark tees need a white ink layer under the colours. If that layer is too thick or not cured well, it gets stiff and splits when the fabric stretches.

Can I iron a DTG printed t-shirt?

Yes, but turn it inside out and never put the iron directly on the print.

What should I do if my print cracks early?

Contact the seller with photos. At ZOJO you can return any tee within 7 days for a full refund, for any reason.
