What Does Kalyug Mean? The Word on Our Kalyug T-Shirt

Kalyug means "the age of Kali", the fourth and last of the four yugas, or ages, in Hindu texts. It's the age of quarrel, when dharma is at its weakest and people chase money, power and ego. When someone says "ghor kalyug" today, they mean the world has hit a new low, often over something as small as a Rs 400 cold coffee. That one word is printed on our Kalyug t-shirt, which sits with the rest of our spiritual t-shirts, so here's what it means, where it comes from, and how the tee is made.

Where the word Kalyug comes from

The Puranas and the Mahabharata split time into 4 yugas that repeat in a cycle: Satya Yuga, Treta Yuga, Dvapara Yuga and Kali Yuga. Each one is shorter and worse than the one before it. Satya Yuga is the age of truth. By Kali Yuga, the bull of dharma is said to stand on just 1 of its 4 legs.

The Kali in Kalyug isn't Goddess Kali. It's a different word, linked to Kali the demon of strife. People mix the two up all the time, so it's worth knowing if someone asks about your tee.

In the traditional count, Kali Yuga lasts 432,000 years and began in 3102 BCE, around the time Krishna left the earth. That puts us roughly 5,100 years in. It's also why "when will kalyug end" is one of the most searched questions about it. The short answer is: not any time soon.

What does ghor kalyug mean?

Ghor means deep or terrible. "Ghor kalyug hai" is what your mausi says when she sees Rs 150 for a bottle of water at a cafe, or when a kid corrects his dada on a WhatsApp forward. People say it half joking and half meaning it.

That's the reason the word works so well on a tee. Everyone in India knows it, and it lands as a joke, a complaint or a quiet bit of faith, depending on who's reading it.

Kalyug keval naam adhara

There's a hopeful side people forget. Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas has the line "Kalijug kewal naam adhara, sumiri sumiri nar utarahi para." Roughly: in Kaliyug, the name of God is the only support, and by remembering it again and again, people cross over.

So the same age that sounds bleak also comes with the simplest way out. No long rituals, just the name. If you wear a Kalyug tee, that's a nice thing to have ready when someone asks what it means.

Why it's spelled कलयुग on our tee

Older texts write it कलियुग, Kaliyug. Most people say and type Kalyug, so our tee uses कलयुग in Devanagari on the chest. The back has a full colour print of an open hand holding an eye. We didn't add a slogan or a translation. The one word does the job.

Our Kalyug tee in 3 fits

Every fit has the same front and back print. All three come in XS to XXL, ship free across India, and usually leave us in 24 to 48 hours because each tee is printed after you order.

| Fit | Price | Fabric | Weight | Cut | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Regular | Rs 699 | 100% cotton | 180 GSM | Regular crew neck | | Oversized | Rs 899 | 100% cotton | 240 GSM | Unisex oversized, dropped sleeves | | Terry oversized | Rs 999 | 90% cotton, 10% polyester terry | 260 GSM | Unisex oversized, drop shoulders |

The regular and the cotton oversized come in white, black and baby blue, and the oversized one has the word in silver lettering. The terry one comes in white, black, baby blue and jade.

Which one should you get? For a hot city or daily summer wear, take the regular or the cotton oversized. From November to February in most of North India, the terry is the better buy. It's thicker, holds its boxy shape and feels warmer. If you've never worn terry, our post on what a terry t-shirt is compares it with cotton in numbers. You'll find every other terry design on the terry oversized t-shirts page.

Take your usual size in all three. If it's wrong, you can swap the size for free within 7 days of delivery. You can also pay 20% now and the rest on delivery.

More tees in the same spirit

Kalyug sits with our Buddha, third eye and Shiva prints on the spiritual t-shirts page. If you're choosing between deities, which god t-shirt to buy puts Shiva, Hanuman, Narasimha and Garuda side by side. If what you like is a Hindi word on your chest, the desi t-shirts page has more of those. And for the stories behind the other designs, read what our Shiva and Buddha tees actually mean.

What is the meaning of Kalyug in English?

Kalyug means "the age of Kali", or the age of strife. It's the fourth and last of the four ages in Hindu texts, the one where dharma is weakest.

When will Kalyug end?

By the traditional count, Kali Yuga lasts 432,000 years from 3102 BCE. That leaves well over 4 lakh years. Some modern teachers count the yugas differently, so you'll see other dates online.
