What makes an oversized t‑shirt premium?

A premium oversized t-shirt comes down to five things you can check before you pay: heavy fabric (220 to 260 GSM), a real oversized cut with dropped shoulders and a size chart that proves it, a print that goes into the cotton, plain facts on the product page, and a return policy you can actually use. Price alone tells you very little. A Rs 1,500 tee on thin fabric is not premium, and a Rs 899 tee at 240 GSM can be.
Here is each one, with the numbers from our own oversized t-shirts so you have something to compare against.
1. Fabric weight: 220 GSM or more
GSM is grams per square metre, the weight of the fabric. It's the spec that separates a tee that hangs well from one that clings and goes see-through. For an oversized fit you want 220 to 260 GSM. Below about 180 the extra width has nothing to hold it up, so the tee collapses instead of falling straight.
Ours come in two weights. The cotton oversized tee is 100% cotton at 240 GSM. The terry oversized tee is 260 GSM, a 90/10 cotton and polyester terry knit with loops on the inside, so it feels thicker and a little softer. Our regular fit tee is 180 GSM, which is fine for a fitted tee but too light for an oversized cut. The full breakdown is in what GSM an oversized t-shirt should be.
If a product page doesn't list GSM at all, assume the light end.
2. The cut: dropped shoulders and real extra width
An oversized tee is not just a regular tee two sizes up. The shoulder seam sits lower on the arm, the body is wider and the length is longer. That's what gives the boxy shape.
Check the size chart in centimetres and compare the same size across fits. Our oversized M measures 112 cm at the chest and 74 cm long. Our regular M is 102 cm at the chest and 69 cm long. So the oversized cut adds about 10 cm of chest at the same size, and you order your normal size. If a brand's "oversized" M is within 2 or 3 cm of its regular M, it's a slightly loose regular tee. We wrote more about this in drop shoulder vs oversized.
3. The print: into the fabric, not on top of it
Cheap graphic tees often use a vinyl or plastic transfer that sits on the surface. It feels stiff, traps heat and cracks at the folds. A premium tee uses a print that goes into or bonds with the cotton.
Every ZOJO tee is DTG printed, which means direct to garment: the printer puts water-based ink straight into the cotton. On our Time Is Soft oversized tee the front print is about 10.4 inches wide. If you want the difference between DTG and the film-based DTF method, it's in DTF vs DTG printing.
4. Facts on the page, not adjectives
"Premium fabric" and "luxury feel" cost nothing to write. A brand that uses good fabric usually says exactly what it is. Look for:
- the fabric and blend, like 100% cotton or 90/10 terry
- the GSM
- a size chart in cm or inches for that exact fit
- the print method
- where it's made and how long it takes to ship
- wash care
Each of our product pages has an "At a glance" box with those lines. For example, our Wide Awake terry tee lists 90% cotton and 10% polyester terry knit, 260 GSM, unisex oversized with drop shoulders, DTG print, Rs 999, printed in Tiruppur.
5. What happens after you pay
A premium product is easy to return. Read the return policy before you buy, not after. How many days do you get? Is it a refund or only store credit? Is a wrong size swapped for free?
Ours: 7-day returns with a full refund for any reason, and a free size exchange. Tees are printed after you order in 24-48 hours and most arrive in 5-8 working days, with free shipping in India. The details are on our exchange and return policy page.
What a premium oversized tee costs in India
You don't need to pay Rs 1,500 for the things above. Our 240 GSM cotton oversized tees are Rs 899 and the 260 GSM terry ones are Rs 999, GST included. If you're buying more than one, the oversized t-shirt combo takes any 2 oversized tees for Rs 1,599 or any 3 for Rs 2,349.
FAQ
What GSM is best for an oversized t-shirt?
220 to 260 GSM. Our cotton oversized tees are 240 GSM and our terry ones are 260 GSM. Anything around 180 GSM or lighter is better for a regular fit.
Is terry better than cotton for an oversized tee?
It's thicker and softer, so it drapes more heavily. Cotton at 240 GSM is lighter and breathes better on hot days. Both are oversized with dropped shoulders in our range.
Should I size up for an oversized t-shirt?
Not if the brand cuts it oversized. Ours already adds about 10 cm of chest over the regular fit at the same size, so order your usual size. Size up only if you want it even looser.
Is a 240 GSM t-shirt too hot for India?
For most of the year it's fine, because 100% cotton breathes and the loose cut lets air move. In peak summer a 180 GSM regular tee is cooler.
